About Handy Gardener Wells
Garden Improvements & Repairs around Wells, Somerset.
I’m Ryan Wynn, a local landscape gardener, fencer and pond chap based in Wells, Somerset, and I run Handy Gardener Wells.
I build wildlife ponds, waterfalls and water features, provide regular garden maintenance, and take on carefully considered small landscaping and fencing projects across Wells and the surrounding Somerset area.
This is a purposefully small business, with a focus on thoughtful, well-built gardens that feel calm, characterful and made to last.

Ryan Wynn – Pond Builder, Gardener & Landscaper
I’ve always loved making things. These days that usually means creating and caring for gardens that feel calm, yet captivating, and designed to last.
I come from a family of makers and started working in our family repair business as a young teenager. Over time I trained in carpentry, decking, paving, pond building and garden design, building a broad range of practical skills along the way.
I also studied Art & Design extensively, including a postgraduate degree in sculpture at the Royal College of Art. That experience still shapes how I approach gardens, particularly how I work with space, materials, planting and moving water.
At the Royal College of Art during the COVID period, my work moved outside even more than usual, with my garden becoming another studio. The work extended into other people’s gardens and gradually grew into this business.
All those experiences help me bring a thoughtful, creative and practical approach to every garden.
Our Story

It all started with a tiny yellow car and a broken gate.
After leaving accountancy, I wanted to do something practical and creative again. In 2022, a friend roped me into repairing a gate near Wells. I soon realised there were gardens everywhere with broken gates, wobbly fences and little jobs nobody quite knew who to call for.
So I started helping.
Over time, small repairs and gardening grew into bigger garden projects, ponds and waterfalls. After two degrees and years studying sculpture, working with rocks, water and plants felt surprisingly familiar — and waterfalls became a particular passion.
Today I’ve come somewhat full circle. I still build ponds and waterfalls, but much of my work is fencing, repairs, gardening and practical garden improvements.
I believe gardens are for people as well as nature. My job is to listen, give honest advice and help create a garden that works for you — generally with a little room for frogs and butterflies too.
The basic approach hasn’t changed:
Be friendly and polite, always.
Don’t rush. Do good work and be tidy.

Our Way
Whether we are building a pond, looking after a garden through regular maintenance visits or taking on a landscaping project, no two gardens are exactly the same. We believe the best results come from responding carefully to each space and the people who will use it.
That is why our approach is always personal, practical and rooted in long-term thinking — creating outdoor spaces that feel calm, useful and quietly distinctive.
We take pride in working carefully, using good materials and taking the time needed to do things properly. Thoughtful preparation, solid construction and attention to detail all help create gardens that not only look good when finished, but continue to grow and mature well over time.
We create gardens where people feel comfortable and connected to the natural world around them. Spaces where people, plants and wildlife can thrive together.
Our Manufacturers
The materials used in a garden play an important role in how it looks, how it feels and how well it lasts. We work with trusted suppliers and choose materials and manufacturers carefully so each garden performs well over time. This also allows us to offer market-leading manufacturer warranties on many of the products we install.
Aquascape
For ponds, streams and waterfalls we use systems from Aquascape, a well-regarded manufacturer specialising in naturalistic water features. Many of their structural components carry lifetime manufacturer warranties, and their EPDM pond liners are supplied with a 20-year manufacturer’s warranty, helping ensure long-term reliability. Other components such as pumps and lighting are covered by product-specific warranties generally between 2 – 5 years.
Charltons Timber Store
We also work with Charltons, a respected local timber supplier. Their “LongLast” ground-contact timbers, including fence posts and railway-style sleepers, are specially treated and have a 15-year manufacturer warranty against rot.
CORE Pro Edge
Where edging is needed, we often recommend CORE Pro Edge. These durable metal edging systems create strong, discreet borders for gravel, planting areas and paths, and come with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty. The flexible design allows smooth curves and clean shapes, while remaining quick to install and long-lasting.
